For years I looked at these shoes and thought they were tacky. Then I reaqd an article about how they were worn at the olympic demonstrations and were now to be produced and sold for $65 in NYC. I immediately thought, "gee, I should try them while they are still cheap." I bought a pair for myself, my gf, her son and my son. I practice and teach taijiquan, I love these shoes for any outdoor practice that I do. They are so tacky looking that they are sort of cool, they wear well, and feel great to use. I even wear them casually now. For the price, they are the best shoe that a martial artist can buy. Who doesn't love a good shoe for $15. I am now collecting them in multiple colors.

I've been using this video in addition to those of The Firm for the past 4 years. I consider it the best step video I've tried. It allows the exerciser to choose the level of intensity and increase it as fitness progresses. Initially, it takes a bit of concentration as the steps can be a bit tricky at first; however, once I got the steps down, I found that it was very enjoyable and not at all boring. The abdominal workout is fairly intense, but worth the time. Give it a try..... You won't be disappointed!

Garmin RUSHED this to market and missed the mark, 2009-02-11

I sold my nuvi 750 to purchase the nuvi 855.
Garmin changed the on/off switch from something you could use to something you have to fumble to turn on and off.
I didn't think they would dump the SD memory card, so I didn't give it a thought when I bought the 855.
Garmin switched to a Micro SD memory.
The volume on the 855 is lower than the nuvi 750, even on max.
Garmin told me that the nuvi 855 included life time maps. NOT TRUE. You have to pay another $119.00.
I think Tom Tom would have been a better choice.

This book is so fun if your into astrology. For the most part its right on the money. I was born on October 23rd and they call that the day of conflicting kharma. God that couldnt be a better description for me. Also the strengths and weaknesses are almost always right on. This is a good book to have when your sittin around just kickin back and talking to friends. Its very interesting.

The transformer plug doesn't make any noise (another reviewer asked about this) so theirs must be faulty. I'd like to add to the comments already made that the volume changes in discrete steps - you cannot get the volume to your desired level because if you go up (or down), it jumps up (or down) by one whole step. All these digital things should have variable volume, which goes in an infinite grdual gradient rather than discrete steps.

Having bought the Nuggets box set and being pretty overwhelmed by the quality of material on it, I would say that this box set is even better. Maybe because I didn't grow up with this era of music, it sounds really fresh to me. I couldn't stop listening to it once I had got it. This box set rescues 50's rock from becoming a novelty and really let you understand how dangerous and raw this stuff was when it came out. It rocks. Of special interest to me were the tracks from Link Wray, Johnny Burnette Trio, and Chan Romero. But the box set is loaded with previously unknown treasures alongside better known contemporaries. I suggest to anyone interested in rock'n roll.

Listening to the audio CD's has an extra dimension to the book. You do get time to catch your breath. And my CD player is in the car. Somehow I survived. I would say that one great advantage to CD's is the ability to hear how the names are pronounced and you get inflections that intended or not help understand where they are going before they get there. An other advantage is that CD's like acid free paper should outlast the reader.
How many times have you asked a simple question and go the answer as "42." Yep, you are a victim to this book. Many of the clichés and truisms that rival Shakespeare are creeping into our vocabulary. And attitudes - "It has been on file."
If you are the one person that somehow got through life with out reading this series or at least seeing this on TV, then you are in for a treat. Somehow this story is earmarked as sci-fi and I guess it can be in a sense and it has all the elements necessary; it delivers a powerful message to the local Zoning Board.
I will not go though the story, as that is why you are reading the book. You need to sit down for the next sentence.
This book has changed my life.

Also in the book you will see some pictures of Sensei Ged Moran (7th Dan), who I have had the great privilege of being taught and training under for a few years.

Sensei Moran is the JSKA-GB Executive Secretary who began training in Shotokan karate in late 1967 at the Red Triangle in Liverpool, under the guidance of Sensei Andy Sherry 8th Dan KUGB, and Shihan Enoeda 9th Dan JKA.

The fact that such karate master greats like Sensei Moran train under Peter should be evidence & proof enough that Peter is well respected in his field and "knows his stuff!!"

This book is similar to "Every Hand Revealed" by Gus Hansen (also highly recommended). The key differences are that where the Hansen book was one player talking the reader through a tourney from start to glorious finish, this book is 3 players commenting on a selection of hands which have been chosen to illustrate important topics in MTTs e.g. stealing blinds; continuation bets; building a big stack; short-stack strategies; deep-stack play; playing draws and bubble play. Each of the 3 authors writes one chapter and the final chapter consists of the 3 of them discussing hands played by Matt Hilger.

What I took away from this book was a selection of points to consider during play rather than a collection of "how to" rules. As the authors demonstrate, there are many viable approaches to playing MTTs and part of the poker learning curve is discovering what works for you. Hence, although the book is an easy read, I'd suggest that you need 50 or so MTTs under your belt before it becoms usefull; complete beginners would probably be better off with something like The Poker Tournament Formula V2 (V1 is for STTs).

Ich bin wirklich begeistert: GURPS UPLIFT ist meiner Ansicht nach eines der vorbildlichsten Sourcebooks der gesamten GURPS Reihe, die ja nun wirklich einige starke Titel enthält! Sicherlich - wer David Brins UPLIFT Zyklus nicht mag braucht sich mit diesem Sourcebook nicht auseinanderzusetzen, aber für alle, die diesen originellen SF-Zyklus kennen und mögen kann ich dieses GURPS-Produkt nur empfehlen.

Eine allgemeine Bemerkung vorweg: ich selbst bin, wie vermutlich viele Rollenspieler, alles andere als ein Fan des meiner Ansicht nach extrem schwerfälligen und unausgegorenen GURPS-Systems... gleichzeitig bin ich von den GURPS-Quellenbüchern immer wieder begeistert und kaufe sie sehr gerne.

Positiv fällt zunächst einmal auf, das GURPS UPLIFT erfreulich umfangreich ist. Die Schrift ist recht klein und mit 176 Seiten ergibt dies eines der dickeren GURPS-Sourcebooks (die Mehrheit der GURPS-Sourcebooks ist 128 Seiten stark). Insofern wird dem Leser also definitiv ein Gegenwert für sein Geld geboten, und inhaltlich wird auf die meisten Aspekte des UPLIFT Universums eingegangen. Hierbei fällt positiv auf, das David Brin, selbst begeisterter Rollenspieler, bei der Erstellung des Produkts zumindest indirekt beteiligt war und damit auch Sorge dafür tragen konnte, dass das UPLIFT Universum in seinem Sinne als Rollenspiel transponiert wurde.

Neben dem hohen Infomationsgehalt und den umfangreichen Hintergrundmaterialien ist weiterhin zu bemerken, dass UPLIFT ein wirklich spannender Hintergrund für SF-Rollenspiele ist. Zunächst mal ist er schlichtweg ungewöhnlich: die Menschen (und die von ihnen genetisch modifizierten Delfine und Schimpansen) sind Neulinge auf der galaktischen Bühne. Die galaktische Zivilisation ist Äonen alt, und die Galaxis (bzw. die Galaxien) sind wirklich überfüllt mit intelligenten Lebensformen, für die die Menschen bestenfalls eine kuriose Randerscheinung sind. Dieser Hintergrund ist somit alles andere als anthropozentrisch, was mal eine echte Ausnahme im SF-RPG Sektor darstellt.

Die Technologie dieses Universums ist ebenfalls uralt und von einer Komplexität, die Menschen in vielen Punkten schlichtweg nicht nachvollziehen können - was dem Spielleiter sicherlich manche nervige Erklärungen erspart (ein typisches Problem bei SF-Rollenspielen). Letztlich ist es eher Diplomatie, die in dieser Hintergrund weiterbringt - die Galaxis ist ein voller Ort voller Ansprüche, Feden, Rivalitäten und Intrigen... und die Menschheit als "NEw Kid On The Block" mittendrin, zwischen den verworrenen Fronten.

Aus Rollenspieler-Sicht ist dieser Hintergrund sowohl exotisch und bizarr, da aber die Spieler hier weis Gott nicht alles kapieren müssen gleichzeitig gut zu leiten - im Gegensatz zu vielen (ansonsten guten) SF-Hintergründen wird nicht vorausgesetzt, dass die Spielercharaktere die Technik, die Gebräuche und die Fraktionen fundiert kennen oder gar nachvollziehen können.

Ich halte UPLIFT daher für besser spielbar als zahlreiche SF-Hintergründe, die einfach an ihrer Komplexität kranken... den archetypischen Fantasy-Hintergrund hat schnell jeder verinnerlicht, eine Sitzung mit z.B. ganz hervorragenden Hintergründen FADING SUNS, AEON TRINITY, TRANSHUMAN SPACE oder auch mit dem Klassiker TRAVELLER setzt meistens ungleich mehr Hintergrundwissen der Spieler voraus, was mitunter schlichtweg in Arbeit ausartet und nicht jedermann anspricht.

Ganz abgesehen davon: ob man nun im UPLIFT Universum spielen will oder nicht, ich bin überzeugt, dass jeder rollenspielende Fan von SF-Hintergründen bei GURPS UPLIFT tolle Inspirationen für seine Kampagne, gleich in welchem Hintergrund, finden wird! UPLIFT ist originell und vielschichtig genug, um für beinahe jeden geschmack etwas zu bieten, und zahlreiche Aspekte dieses Universums sind einfach eigenständiger als in anderen SF-Hintergründen.
Insofern möchte ich dieses Quellenbuch auch und ganz besonders den SF- Rollenspielern empfehlen, die mit Ihrer Kampagne nun nicht das Universum wechseln möchten... die Chancen stehen verdammt gut, in diesem Quellenbuch genug neue Ideen für die nächsten Sitzungen zu finden.

Alles in allem: GUPRS UPLIFT ist ein spannender Hintergrund, ein erfreulich umfangreiches Werk und sowohl für SF-Rollenspieler wie auch für Fans von David Brins spannenden Zyklus uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen.

After reading each chapter in this book, I took time to reflect on each lesson. The one that hit home for me was: "I need to be ready to love someone by loving myself first". Oddly enough I met someone soon after who told me he could never love someone who didn't love themself... This book taught me the skills I needed to be a good partner(if I choose to be one). This is not a book of answers, but concepts of how love relationships can be successful.

Nein, Möwen zu bestimmen ist nicht leicht. Aber das Buch nimmt einen an die Hand. Kurz aber inhaltsreich wird der Nutzer in die Tücken der Bestimmung eingeführt: Mauser, Abnutzung des Gefieders, Hybridisierung, "Sehfehler". Dazu vergleichende Darstellungen der Arten. Im Artteil sehr hilfreich die 3-fache Beschreibung: Kurzfassung, "Identifikation" und "Description" - letztere mit Subspezies, geografischen Variationen, Hybriden. Das alles mit Zeichnungen und Fotos systematisch illustiert.
Für unsere Region besonders hilfreich: Unterscheidung Silber-/Mittelmeer-/Steppenmöwe und die Darstellung der Variantionsbreite der Subspezies der Heringsmöwe.

Ich bin Geologiestudent und habe mir dieses Buch aus dem Grund geholt, dass ich Stoff zur Vertiefung gesucht habe. Es enthält einige Interessante Bereiche, aber der Autor widerspricht sich in vielem selbst, in einen Kapitel behauptet er, die Globale Erwärmung wäre Natürlichem Ursprungs, im nächsten sagt er, der Mensch wäre dafür verantwortlich....
Es gibt immer wieder Menschen, die versuchen,uns zu überzeugen, dass die Klimaerwärmung vollkommen natürlich sei und alles, was wir tun, um dagegen vorzugehen, Sinnlos sei. Und ich denke, der Autor gehört dazu, dennoch sind einige Bereiche wirklich interessant, man sollte allerdings mit Vorsicht an dieses Buch herangehen.

Die Science-Fiction/Western-Serie "Firefly" von Joss Whedon ("Buffy", "Angel") hielt 2002 nur 11 Folgen lang durch, bevor sie vom US-Sender "Fox" abgesägt wurde: Fox verschob mehrfach den Sendeplatz und strahlte die Folgen in der verkehrten Reihenfolge aus, u.a. die Pilotfolge, in der die Charaktere vorgestellt werden, zum Schluss. Dennoch hatte die Serie eine ungewöhnlich treue Gefolgschaft gewonnen, die Petitionen einreichte und Anzeigen schaltete - mit Erfolg: Erstmals wurde eine gecancelte Serie auf 4 DVDs (incl. 3 nicht gesendeter Folgen) veröffentlicht - und verkaufte sich allein in Nordamerika sagenhafte 600.000 mal. Whedon durfte seine Geschichte (für das Konkurenz-Studio "Universal") im Kino-Film "Serenity" zu Ende erzählen.
Auch der "Visual Companion" zu "Serenity" war erfolgreich, so dass nun zwei vergleichbare Bildbände zu "Firefly" veröffentlicht werden, die ganz ähnlich gestaltet sind:
Im Zentrum stehen die Drehbücher zu den ersten sechs Folgen (Serenity, The Train Job, Bushwhacked, Shindig, Safe, Our Mrs Reynolds), wobei diese "shooting scripts" teilweise deutlich von den fertigen Versionen auf DVD abweichen. Illustriert werden die Geschichten mit vielen Standfotos, leider eher wenigen Set-Fotos, aber umso mehr Produktions-Zeichnungen und Abbildungen von Requisiten. Sehr nett sind auch die vielen Informations-Schnipsel, die an allen passenden Stellen eingefügt wurden und die Abbildungen erläutern, Hintergründe darstellen sowie Erinnerungen von Schauspielern und Crew wiedergeben. Während die Nebendarsteller in bis zu halbseitigen Artikeln beschrieben werden, sind für die neun Hauptcharaktere/-darsteller jeweils Doppelseiten reserviert: links ein Essay, rechts ein ganzseitiges Portrait-Foto.
Leider stammen die Artikel nicht von Whedon oder den anderen Kreativen, sondern von vier unbekannten Autoren (Fans?), die allerdings durchaus gut zu schreiben vermögen: Abbie Bernstein, Bryan Cairns, Karl Derrick und Tara DiLullo. Auch das große Whedon-Interview zu Beginn des Buches ist nur halb so lang wie im "Serenity Companion" (bzw. das Interview wird auf beide Firefly-Bände verteilt). Folglich wird Whedon auch nicht als Buch-Autor angegeben, stattdessen steht auf dem Titel "Created by Joss Whedon".
Im zweiten Band (für Frühjahr 2007 angekündigt) folgen neben den restlichen Dehbüchern u.a. ein ausführlicher Artikel zu "Vera", der berühmtesten Waffe der Serie sowie eine Würdigung der treuen Fans. Dann wird dann vielleicht auch die Absetzung der Serie thematisiert, die in diesem ersten Band kaum zur Sprache kommt, wohl auch, weil Fox die Rechte an fast allen Abbildungen sowie den Drehbüchern besitzt.
Fazit: Für Firefly/Serenity-Fans eine sehr informative Goldgrube und ein Pflichtkauf, aber auch für Einsteiger geeignet, denn die besondere Qualität der Serie liegt in den hervoragenden Charakteren und dem trockenen Witz - und beide kommen in gedruckter Form durchaus zur Geltung.

Given the popular view of Chess as mechanical & abstract, this novel radiates surprising warmth. Perhaps because the story is not *only* about Chess. It's also about what might appear a perfect contrast to the world of abstract games: near-unconditional love between two living humans.

The central protagonist, Luzhin, grows up a Chess prodigy, becomes a top world player, meets the love of his life, a woman of character who loves him back despite his appalling health, & uncouth traits. Their union lasts for a while, until - but you should read the rest.

Now there's no escaping that the book turns around the axis of Chess. Though Nabokov always evades the purely technical, I have a hard time pushing the book to people who are not at least interested in gaming in the most general terms, & perhaps know the basics of Chess (this is roughly my own case). Much of the story deals with how its main character, within the realm of Chess, is a dancer in the greatest Russian tradition, & to appreciate the full beauty of this, however indirectly conveyed by Nabokov's elegant style, some appreciation for abstract games are an asset.

Still, it's in the real, earthy & fleshy world that one woman instantly recognizes our hero as master of an exalted craft. When he later runs into trouble, she is true to him, striving to transform him - less for her own comfort than out of compassion, & for his survival. Her love, & his appreciation of it, are moving. Though the novel does lose a little pace towards the end, this is more than made up for by calm, incandescent splendour. A Love Story, probably unreadable if it weren't so intelligently written.

Jean Ray's "Malpertuis" was his only novel-length work and the product of many years of revision. Though the novel was clearly an important milestone for Ray, it is also surprisingly lucid and well-paced, not at all overworked. The novel's multiple narratives and "Chinese box" structure are intricate but not distractingly complex. The prose is evocative yet spare, with a minimum of purple passages--hardly enough, in fact, to qualify the story as part of the Gothic tradition. Much of the time Ray spent on the book was clearly dedicated to a careful process of polishing.

Any attempt at summarizing the scope of the novel reveals just how necessary it was for the author to hone a fluid style for this story. The novel's central conceit involves several related manuscripts which are organized for us by one of Jean Ray's alter ego rogues, a well-educated thief who stole the manuscripts from a monastery. With his preface, epilogue and occasional interjections, the thief acts as our textual guide, arranging the narratives into a comprehensible structure. Ostensibly, his only goal is to organize the text for greatest clarity, but in fact his true goal, or Ray's true goal--perhaps there is no difference--is to position the story's pieces to evoke the maximum possible dread.

The oldest of the manuscripts presents a short, cryptic tale of a sea voyage and a foreboding vision of the numinous, planting a massive supernatural mystery at the heart of the novel. However, the central narrative takes place several decades later and relates the adventures of young Jean-Jacques Grandsire. The additional narratives serve essentially to draw links between these two stories.

At the beginning of his memoir, Jean-Jacques tells of being summoned, along with a motley company of acquaintances and family, to the death bed of his mysterious Uncle Cassave. Cassave soon dies, leaving his considerable fortune to the fifteen people he has summoned. However, there are stiff terms attached to his gift: The inheritors must all live for the rest of their lives at Malpertuis, Cassave's mansion. Jean-Jacques soon realizes there is something amiss at Malpertuis (a name meaning either "house of evil" or "house of cunning"). There is something odd in the attic, in the labyrinthine hallways, and in the surrounding wood. There is something even stranger about Malpertuis' other inhabitants: the mad hermit Lampernisse who haunts the mansion's dark corridors, the hulking mute Tchiek, and the diabolic taxidermist Philarete, to name only a few. When the secret of Malpertuis is finally brought to light among this bizarre cast of characters, the mansion erupts into a seething cauldron of terror, and both heaven and earth seem to collapse around Jean-Jacques.

Again, Ray's novel displays the signs of a carefully trimmed and focused work. There is, however, one glaring instance where the trimming stopped short - that being a rather obvious and mundane werewolf subplot near the end of the novel, which seems intended entirely to deliver a dramatic interlude amid the denouement's sheaves of exposition. The subplot is not woven into the whole cloth of the story and comes off looking like little more than a clumsy patch. Still, this small indulgence is easily forgiven in the aftermath of so horrible, so terrifying, so fine a fantasy.

This book is a bit sappy for my taste. I could not find one in a local bookstore to preview, so I ordered it without knowing what the inside was like. My main problem with it is that many of the questions are a little too specific, such as "did you ever enter anything in a county fair" or "did you ever fly a kite, if so, who made the kite". It's just not a book that fits with my family very well. I also ordered "Grandfather Remembers" by Judith Levy, which is absolutely wonderful - detailed, but not specific. It has more of a fun approach rather than a sappy/sentimental approach. I will be ordering "Grandmother Remembers" also by Judith Levy, hoping that it is similar. It doesn't, however, have as nice a front cover as "Grandmother: A Record Book of Memories."

I once had the opportunity to ask a brusquely competent literary agent what he knew about the UFO book market. Not much, he replied, but "I know books that say they don't exist don't sell." Let us hope that bleak Fate bypasses this excellent volume, which gives its game away in bold block letters on the cover.

*The UFOs That Never Were* is a collaboration between Jenny Randles, one of the field's most consistently interesting authors, and Andy Roberts and Dr. David Clarke, both veterans of numerous inquiries into mysteries of British earth and sky. Their book deconstructs in detail a number of well-known UFO cases, primarily British, which on closer examination appear attributable to mundane causes. These include events such as the mysterious sky phenomena off the Butt of Lewis in 1996, the Howden Moor "crash retrieval" rumors, and the legendary Rendlesham Forest incident, here subjected to a lengthy and masterful deflation. Randles draws on the admirable work of James Easton to argue compellingly that this "best-attested case of a UFO crash outside the US," as it has been described, was in fact caused by, well, a lighthouse. It's a depressing finish for a tale that once promised to achieve something of the mythopoeic status of Roswell.

In a broader sense, *The UFOs That Never Were* is a welcome antidote to the sloppy research that fills a good deal of the saucer bookshelf. "Famous cases" easily achieve a life of their own, the garbled details repeated faithfully by one hack after another. Yet such cases sometimes evaporate under close scrutiny, and it's a pleasure to watch these authors take us step by step through the detective work involved in a genuine investigation.

Reality being a messy business, the answers they find often are incomplete and complex. Andy Robert's solution to the Berwyn Mountain "UFO crash" of 1974, for instance, involves an earthquake, bolide meteors and poachers hunting at night with powerful lamps, a coincidence that leaves one longing for the parsimony of a simple spaceship. Roberts is well-known for his barbed wit concerning Britain's hapless alphabet soup of saucer organizations; here he seems restrained, but the comedy still seeps through in his description of the angry conniptions that ensued in some corners of ufology following his discovery that the perfectly good flying saucer of Yorkshire's Cracoe Fell was in fact a shelf of reflective rock on a hillside.

If ufology seems clueless, the "authorities" remain gutless, as Randles found while investigating film footage of a ball of light seen by numerous witnesses near Long Crendon in 1973. A half-dozen of the UK's leading atmospheric physicists viewed the film, decided it was not ball lightning and agreed they had no other explanation for it, yet declined to investigate further. After all, there are research grants to be pursued, and no one condemned to toil in academic mills wants a whiff of heresy clinging to his name. (Somewhere, Charles Fort gave a low chuckle.)

Randles ultimately found evidence that the phenomenon was caused by a malfunctioning F-111 dumping and igniting fuel at a dangerously low altitude-and near a school! Understandably, the military establishment did not turn handsprings with eagerness to further her investigation.

For the most part, the authors restrict themselves to the facts of each case at hand, although they offer little comfort to anyone still hoping for extraterrestrial visitors. Dr. Clarke in particular is fond of criticizing one pseudoscience (ufology) in the language of another (sociology). Thus the UFO phenomenon is a byproduct of "an age preoccupied with space travel"-fair comment for a brief slice of the fifties and sixties, perhaps, but today? As a would-be Martian colonist, I would like nothing better than to see more evidence of this preoccupation, but as JG Ballard has suggested, it seems increasingly clear that the "Space Age" is not only over but a fading memory. Yes, yes, Star Wars and Treks, that silly Grey's mug plastered on every item China can craft from plastic; all a part of the pop culture, no question, as are boy bands and vapid Japanese cartoons. Why one part of this spectrum should unhinge so many has not yet been explained to my satisfaction.

That mandatory quibble aside, this seems to me to be most intelligent book on the UFO phenomenon published in several years. It would be a shame, though perhaps not a surprising one, if *The UFOs That Never Were* fails to make some impact on the enthusiasts who line the deeply eroded divides of ufology, for this excellent work could and should serve as a model for serious UFO inquiry. Alas, the true believers seem largely incapable of such efforts, while the American-style "skeptics" will no doubt prefer to continue debunking cases from afar, with that eerie clairvoyance vouchsafed only to the CSICOP faithful.

A good product for my Toshiba pda, 2004-06-20

I bought it for use on the Toshiba e755 six months ago. I did not find any problem. It runs surprisingly fast, so I put a lot mp3s in it and my pda can be used as a small size ipod :)

For a good synopsis of the story read C. Vandehey's review. Having not read any other books by Ilona Andrews aka Ilona Gordon and her husband Andrew Gordon (also known as Gordon) I do not feel biased when reviewing this book. Honestly, I really enjoyed the story. Forget about the cover art on the front of the book. This story takes place in the present but the setting is The Edge; a land between the Broken (USA) and the Weird, a magical realm. Close your eyes and imagine a place where you could visit that is between these two worlds.

There are interesting characters and not everyone is as they appear. It has elements of being a fantasy but it is also a romance. If you prefer one genre but don't like the other then rethink reading this book. But if you are tired of reading the mundane plots of so many romances that are written today try ON THE EDGE. You can almost feel that a man AND woman had a say in writing this book. There is a bite to this tale, something that grips you and keeps you reading.

What made it five stars for me, something I am not generous in handing out? I found myself cheering for Rose and Declan. I wanted good things to happen to them. I love humor in a romance and their bantering and quips had me laughing. William, Georgie and Jack as secondary characters tugged at me also. Maybe I don't read enough fantasy but I enjoyed the storyline. It was interesting enough that I caught myself reading the book while putting my yogurt, instead of coffee, into the microwave to heat up. Best of all I wanted to read more about this land, the time and its people. I am looking forward to Bayou Moon, the second book in this series that is suppose to be released in late September, 2010.

Carrie, une jeune provinciale de 18 ans prend le train pour aller vivre à Chicago où elle compte trouver du travail. Dans le train, elle rencontre un voyageur de commerce, un certain Drouet qui lui fait la court et lui laisse sa carte. Carrie débarque chez sa soeur, qui est mariée à un homme travailleur et taciturne. Elle trouve de petits emplois qui suffisent tout juste à payer sa pension chez sa soeur et finit par revoir Drouet et devenir sa maîtresse. Elle déménage alors dans un petit appartement avec lui. C'est à travers lui qu'elle rencontrera un de ses collègues de travail, un certain Hurstwood, un homme bien plus âgé, installé dans la vie et père de famille. Hurstwood perd la tête devant la fraîcheur de Carrie, vole dans la caisse de son entreprise pour fuir avec elle à New York. Elle, naïve, ne sait rien du vol ni du statut d'homme marié de Hurstwood. A new York, les choses ne tournent pas comme Hurstwood le pensait.

Dreiser sait vraiment décrire les choses de la vie, la condition des ouvriers et les petites gens de son époque. Ce que j'ai aimé, en dépit de procédés littéraires parfois un peu surannés, c'est qu'il ne juge pas ses personnages et cela les rend plus humains, plus crédibles. Ses personnages ne sont pas punis pour leurs actions peu morales. Car Dreiser n'est pas moralisateur, il décrit simplement la vie telle qu'elle va avec ses fortunes et ses infortunes, chose qui n'était pas pour plaire à la critique d'alors. Le livre sera très mal reçu dans les Etat-unis hyper puritains de l'époque, mais acclamé en Grande-Bretagne. Intéressant aussi de voir comment évoluent les personnages de Hurstwood et de Carrie et comme ils vont à contre-courant de tout ce que l'on attendait d'eux. Ces personnages nous surprennent jusqu'au bout, en particulier Hurstwood que l'on pressentait plutôt comme opportuniste, dominateur et manipulateur mais qui se révélera être un homme fragile, finalement digne, presque un homme d'honneur. Un grand classique, dont j'effleure à peine les grands thèmes, mais qui gagne à être découvert pour l'habileté de Dreiser à nous peindre les hommes.

The Sweet Hereafter is one of the most beautiful movies ever made. After watching it several times the past six years I understand it was about reconciliation, and forgiveness, similar to the "illusion vrs reality" message of his other great movie Exotica.

Nicole knew that Billy Ansel had improper relations with his eventual wife while she was still a young teenager. She understood this the night before the accident when Billy gave her the sweater which his deceased wife had "grown out of". By lying Nicole saved Billy from the exposure a trial would bring (Nicole was wearing the sweater during the accident). At the same time she was indirectly coming to terms with (forgiving) what her father had done to her. Notice Nicole's teary eyes when she looks at Billy the night he visits to talk her parents out of continuing with the lawsuit. The sweater was the key to the movie. Forgiveness is one of the most "human" experiences a person can have, and cuts to the very soul even though you may not recognize why the movie is affecting you that way. This movie is a must see for our messed up (but never hopeless) world. Forgiveness is redemption.

Etwa 1982 hörte ich bei einer Bekannten eine Schallplatte, deren Musik mich bis heute nicht mehr losgelassen hat. Ich habe mir später OCTET als CD selbst gekauft und seitdem weitere Werke von S. Reich, die mich alle faszinierten; Octet / Violine Phase / Music For... ist jedoch mein Favorit geblieben.

Reichs Musik wird der sog. minimal music zugeordnet, - meines Wissens nach aber nicht wegen der scheinbar minimalistischen Klangstruktur, sondern wegen der Vorliebe der Minimal music-Künstler für die amerikanische minimal art.
Minimalistisch kann man die Musik auch wahrlich nicht nenne. Zwar baut sich das musikalische Thema aus kleinen, sich ständig wiederholenden Phrasen auf, aber durch den vielschichtigen zeitversetzten Einsatz verschiedener akustischer(!) Instrumente, entwickelt sich schnell ein Klangteppich, der den Hörer geradezu hypnotisch in seinen Bann zieht.
Lediglich das Stück Violin Phase findet nicht meine 100%ige Begeisterung, - hier wird das gleiche Prinzip (virtuos) von nur einem Instrument, der Geige, ausgeführt. Dieses Stück kann den nicht so aufnahmebereiten Zuhörer etwas nerven.

Insbesondere die Instrumentierung ist für alle durch elektronische Klänge zugekleisterten Ohren ein absolutes Klangerlebnis und die CD Octet / Violine Phase / Music For... von Steve Reich auch für "Minimalismus"-ungewohnte Ohren durchaus zu empfehlen.

Great sound, 2010-02-27

I got this receiver to compliment my Samsung 46" LED screen. The unit is pushing JBL tower speakers and sub with JBL small bookshelves for the surrounds. First of all, the sound is great-clear and airy with no distortion that I can detect. Setup is fairly easy with the included microphone. The only quirk that has affected me is that when the HDMI TV is turned on, a signal is sent from the TV which puts whatever is attached to first scene button on the left. Not a deal breaker, but it means I have to press more remote buttons than I like to put it back into the right mode. Also, it takes a while to plow through the manual and get it set up, but once you do, television and movies sound fantastic in discrete surround sound. Definitely a good buy if you can get it on sale.

Ca n'est pas dit dans le descriptif (comme souvent hélas, il est très incomplet), mais cette édition comporte les DEUX versions du film : la version originale (one+one) montée par Godard, et la version remontée par les producteurs (Sympathy For The Devil) après quelques mois d'exploitation.
A vrai dire, il n'y a pas d'immenses différences, mais ça doit être signalé.

Le son est mono d'origine, mais reste tout à fait excellent.

L'image est extraordinairement belle et fine : la remasterisation pour le bluray a été conduite de manière impeccable. Le format d'image est en 4x3, mais c'est aussi le format original.

Nombreux bonus intéressants, et dans le coffret une petite brochure reprenant un très grand nombre des critiques (presque toutes négatives, c'est hilarant !) de l'époque, et celles publiées lors de la re-sortie du film en 2003.

Un seul petit regret, le chapitrage est un peu erratique, et ne permet pas de sauter les scènes qui ne passionneront personne. C'est à dire celles qui ne sont pas consacrées aux Stones, évidemment... Mais en tout une édition extrêmement réussie, difficile d'imaginer mieux.

I've been a fan of Scouting For Girls since 2007, and their first album was an instant hit, winner, amazing!
This is different, the first play I carefully listened, and I don't know, it didn't hit me straight away, it was good, but not, wow. So, I played it again, and I'm not sure, something hit me, it's upbeat and more 'poppy' but it was just what I needed. It's grey outside and bound to rain at some point this week .. but somehow I know I can put this album on and it will make me feel happy again. I'm so excited for them, got my tour tickets, and I know it's going to be another amazing show. One of the best bands I've ever seen live, and can't wait to see the new tracks live. Would of preferred a few acoustic songs, but maybe thats just me being a sucker for acoustics, but no doubt about it, this album will be played for a long time!

There is no film quite like the original "Casino Royale". Apart from "Waterworld" and "The Island Of Doctor Moreau", has there been the making of a movie quite as riddled with chaos as this?

I love the fact that the many satisfied customers of Daniel Craig's debut may well find themselves checking out what the sixties version of Ian Fleming's book was like - and their reactions on seeing this pandemonium. Still, if you haven't yet - read and be warned!

The plot of the film is this. 'Sir' James Bond, former superspy played here by David Niven, is leading a happily-retired life when 'M' and other heads of the world's secret service come to ask him out of retirement to face a new threat to world peace. Stammering, doddery and celibate, Bond here is clearly no Connery, but when 'M' tries to force him out of retirement by blowing up his mansion, he himself is killed. Bond travels up to Scotland to bury 'M's remains, but is targeted by enemy agents. On finally returning to London, 007 hits on an idea that will confuse the enemy ( as much as it confuses the audience ) - he will change every member of the organisation's name ( males AND females ) to James Bond.

Cue five directors helming several bizarre adventures, including James' daughter by Mati Hari, Mati Bond, going to Berlin to try and cut off the money supply of Le Chiffre ( played with typical show-off relish by Orson Welles ). Unfortunately, the only bit of the film that might have made sense, where Bond plays Le Chiffre at the baccarat table at the titular Casino, was ruined by Peter Sellers' refusal to play 'his' Bond opposite the larger-than-life American. Sellers' performance generally is subdued here, and his disappearance from the film ( having apparently tried to meddle in the script ) makes things even more confusing than they might have been.

Basically, and mostly this is down to an appallingly-troubled production, the movie is utter mayhem. Characters come and go for no apparent reason, particular Woody Allen's dastardly 'Jimmy' Bond ( nephew of Sir James ) and Sellers' Evelyn Tremble/James Bond surrogate. Characters have no consistent or feasible motives, notably Ursula Andress' Vesper, and sometimes do absurd things out of the blue ( Sellers beating up the customs official, or dressing up as historical characters in the middle of a romantic scene ). Guest stars appear at random and nearly all misfire - from Peter O'Toole in Tremble's hallucination ( and it's never explained how he got captured in the first place ), to Stirling Moss outside the Casino ( with Sellers shouting "Next time I'll get Fangio! ). George Raft appears at the end only to be ( silently ) shot by a backward-firing gun, and all hell breaks loose as the set is swamped by extras in all kinds of outfits for a punch-up, "Blazing Saddles"-style, before the whole Casino is blown-up, Bonds and all.

Crazy from start to finish, the original "Casino Royale" is a film like no other. Despite the beautiful Burt Bacharach music, it's impossible not to be stunned at the sight of a film collapsing into utter chaos by the frame. It may be the worst film you ever see, or the most captivating. I just wait with interest to see if someone reviews it as being superior to the 2006 'remake'...

While "Night Moves" might get the edge as Bob Seger's best album, "Stranger in Town" might actually be a more consistent collection of songs. From the opening classic of heartbreak in La-La land "Hollywood Nights," to the superb breakup ode that closes the album "The Famous Final Scene," there is not a bad song in the mix. Other classic Seger performances here include the overplayed "Old Time Rock and Roll," and the excellent ballads "Still the Same" and "We've Got Tonight." Bob also rocks on "Feel Like a Number" and "Ain't Got No Money." This is an excellent album that deserves to be in any classic rock fan's collection.

This is a classic - a book which is part of history and contributed to and made history. I am writing this review in response to the ridiculous, dismissive and inaccurate review which gave it one star.

For a start, this book is written by Michael Foot, Frank Owen, former Liberal MP and Peter Howard, Crossbencher at the Sunday Express and a previous captain of the English rugby team. This group of people are not a group of narrow, dogmatic leftist fellow-travellers in the pay of some foreign ideology as the terrible review insinuates. Instead all three were united by working for Lord Beaverbrook, an arch Tory, who because he prevented his journalists writing for other papers and outlets, had to invent the name 'Cato'.

This book was written at the point of France collapsing and the Dunkirk miracle and came out in the early days of the Churchill Government. It was written and reads as a polemic, tapping into the popular rage which was widespread about the failed Tory politicians who had appeased Hitler and Mussolini.

Guilty Men charged the foreign policies of all of the UK Governments of the 1930s with letting this country's defences down: Ramsay MacDonald's Tory dominated administration, Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain, and of not preparing this nation to stand up to fascist aggression. This is undoubtably true: Japanese aggression in China, the German and Italian intervention in the Spanish Civil War against the democratically elected centre-left government, Mussolini's invasion of Abyssinia, topped by Chamberlain's craven and inept carving up of the democratic state of Czechoslovakia and handing on a plate to Hitler, should shame all of us to this day.

It is true that this book understandably simplifies. It wasnt just Tories who appeased Hitler and the dictators: George Lansbury and David Lloyd George spectacularly got Hitler wrong. Yet, all these years on: Guilty Men broadly got it right: British Governments of the 1930s were Tory and they let Hitler and Mussolini march all over the continent before they decided to make a stand.

This book is a part of British history, articulating the popular imagination about Tory appeasement, and playing a part in the creation of collective opinion which led to 1945 and the election of a Labour Government. Truly an important, fascinating, riveting, pulsating read.

The entire Cd is almost listenable though a few tracks you might want to skip, this is expected on a compilation CD.These are great Alternative Bands and you will probably hear of one of them getting signed soon.

Brilliant camera, brilliant service!, 2005-01-06

I have been meaning to buy a digital camera for a loooong time. I am used to using 35mm SLR cameras, and thought I'd get a digital one as a 'backup' camera to take to places where I don't want to have to lug a big SLR. So I was going to get a cheapish digital, somewhere around £50 or so. However, when I saw this Pentax on Amazon at this price I couldn't resist!
I'm very very glad now that I went ahead and bought it. I spent some time learning all the features (and there are a lot!) and trying out some pictures and videos. The quality is pretty incredible. The features are great - this little camera can do most of the things that my Olympus OM4-Ti can do. I can see myself using this camera an awful lot!
When I placed the order for the camera (two days before it arrived, and that was on free delivery!) I thought that the free case would simply come with it. It was only later that I realised I had made a mistake and that I should have actually ordered the case. I was quite annoyed. So I sent an email to Amazon explaining the situation, and they immediately sent me one back to say that of course they would sort it all out, which they did, and I received the very nice leather case on the same day as the camera. So all in all a pretty amazing service from Amazon - thank you!
Whether you are looking for a point-and-shoot digital camera or a camera that will (almost) replace a pretty sophisticated SLR, buy this Pentax and you won't be disappointed. He he he, I sound like an advert!

It's not surprising that the positive reviews for this TV are somewhat recent. I have experienced a problem with this TV that many other Westinghouse TV owners have. After six months of use, the TV simply won't turn on. The TV has been sitting in one place, undisturbed, and there is no reason for it to go bad suddenly. We're contacting the manufacturer, but I have the feeling I will be paying for shipping or some other unreasonable cost to support their defective product. If you do a search for "westinghouse TV problems" or something similar, many many reports will come up of customers with the same problems.

Bottom line is, the TV is a good bargain, but only if you don't need it to last for very long.

Je ne suis pas déçue par la qualité de cet ouvrage qui répond parfaitement à mes attentes. Par contre, je pense qu'Amazon aurait du l'emballer avec plus de soin: le carton, c'est bien mais lorsqu'il est amené à subir les imtempéris, cela ne protège pas les livres! Celui-ci est arrivé un peu gondolé et avec un pli sur la couverture! Je l'ai eu entre les mains avant que le carton d'emballage ne sèche, ce qui a évité qu'il ne colle sur cette dernière...Mais bon, c'était moins une et pour un livre neuf, cette mésaventure est quand même regrettable!

Eternally bitter, cynical but never toxic and always with a hint of beautiful humanity, Nicole Holofcener is always a distaff alternative to Woody Allen's neurotic obsessions. Her works, deemed as 'vagina movies', are no less assured, and even surpass the works of her male counterparts; whereas, Allen's works nowadays are consistent in their inconsistency, Holofcener's works organically evolve to correspond to the reality that we live in, and, as response, the people that we become. Her first film, "Walking and Talking" back in 1996 is a thoroughly charming and affable film, with concepts of loneliness, abandonment and feeling lost explored, but the pervading anxiety and bitter humour that have long since been her staple from her second film thereafter, are kept at bay, for most of the time. Her characters continually grow. Now, circa 21st century, and being caustic seems to be a natural trait. Still, Holofcener uses that to great effect; bitterness never overshadows, but merely used as a launching pad to explore the quiet beauty hidden amidst the toxic and the unpleasant.

In her fourth film, "Please Give", she tackles capitalism, displaced guilt, physical appearances, infidelity and death amidst a chaotic, arbitrary world that is rather nihilistic, but only in a gentle, breezy, free-wheeling meaninglessness that does not feel like a discourse on an Ingmar Bergman's nothingness, but more akin to Eric Rohmer's affable meandering that is no less understatingly hurtful and quietly emotional.

Set in rumbling New York City, Kathy (Catherine Keener) and Alex (Oliver Platt) own a furniture store, set by the couple's practice of buying furnitures at very low prices and put them up with high markups. They are also waiting for the next door neighbour, a bitter, ungrateful old hag, Andra (Ann Guilbert), to die so that they could expand the size of their apartment. In the meantime, Andra's two nieces, Rebecca (Rebecca hall) and Mary (Amanda Peet) are dealing with their own problems: Rebecca is a busybody, working as a mammogram technician, keeping romance and personal life at bay; and Mary, a skin consultant, who continually stalks her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend, and at some point, ends up having an affair with Alex. Amidst all this, Kathy and Alex's daughter, is dealing with her bodily appearance: her weight and acne problems.

"Please Give" sets up this multi-strand storylines via Holofcener's typical free floating, stream-of-conscious fashion that negates the structural device of storytelling, and opts for a presentation of a slice-of-life. The camera adopts an objective point of view, even revelling in arbitrary scenes that seem to never amount to anything, but somehow feel organic to the whole film. And even with this objectivity, it is never unsympathetic, even if most of these characters are unlikeable and even bordering on being nasty.

Indeed, sometimes it's better to start off with the negative to accentuate the positive. With this, Holofcener is able to explore the moral implications of living in a capitalistic society. To what extent does one go to successfully carve out a comfortable life for one's self? Kate's obsession with giving out a lot money to the poor seems irrational, but really an ascetic ideal that she churns out for herself, to get rid of her guilt for her wrong choices in life. It is an inherently self-destructive act, prompted by shame, insecurities, selfishness and self-absorption, that is merely offset by the outer appearance of the act: it is an ostentatiously kind and generous act of giving. Kate's asceticism mirrors Mary's affinity for stalking an unsuspecting woman and having an illicit affair with Alex: the lengths to which one goes to, just to find a name for an undefinable feeling of loneliness and pain. At least, with the daughter, it is called being chubby, and acne-ridden. Wait until she gets older.

All of these characters, just like in any other Holofcener films, feel insignificant; they struggle living in a hostile, unlovable world, and they respond to themselves and to each other in equally hostile, unlovable manner; but there is quiet beauty that is transcendental when one watches Holofcener deviates further more into seemingly random scenes; like seeing an anonymous couple looking for the right furniture in Kathy's store, or Rebecca walking the dog with Kathy's daughter. Like watching an unexpected petal falling off a dying flower, Holofcener's images are delicately evocative, and revelatory in their quietness.

"Please Give" is a very sharp, brutally honest work that is all at once, hilarious, acidic, and always strangely moving, without any need for emotional manipulation or ostentatious dramatic histrionics. See this, not merely as an entertainment, but as an opportunity to bask in its many quiet moments of emotional insights that neither praise nor condemn its characters. Besides, there is Catherine Keener, Holofcener's beloved muse, one of the very few actresses nowadays who can effectively kill someone with merely delivering a cutting remark, and simultaneously still break a heart with pathos for her character.

I love going through all my tapes and cds. It is amazing how much my musical tastes has evolved in the past decade. Nine - ten years ago, I was a big fan of Toni Childs' music. Now Tori Amos and Diva Destruction has taken over my stereo. It is amazing how much my tastes in music has changed over the years. Still I do like to occasionally reminiscence about my young adult life by throwing in some old music. Toni Childs is one of those artists I like to listen to every now and then. If my memory serves me right, I first came across her when I first heard "I've Got to Go Now" on the radio. At the time, I have never heard anyone sing like the way that Toni did. Her voice is so big and warm. "I've Got to Go Now" is a wonderful blend of gorgeous melodies and melancholy lyrics. In fact, the songs on "House of Hope" are pretty dark. "I've Got to Go Now" is a bittersweet song about a neglected wife who leaves her husband who is gone too much. My two favorite songs on "House of Hope" are "Heaven's Gate" and "The Dead Are Dancing". The acoustic ballads simply gives me chills down my spine, especially "Heaven's Gate". I almost forgot how wonderful "House of Hope" is until I had recently started listening to it. Toni Childs has a magnificent voice who should have received more recognition.

I love this bike. It's comfortable and easy to use. It was very reasonably priced for such good quality. I hop on the bike and listen to books on CD. My only complaints: assembly took hours & the instructions for assembly weren't that good; the box it came in was heavy to transport; and it takes up more space than I would prefer. In spite of these issues, I really like it. It's transformed my workouts.

Good introduction to CGI, 2005-07-03

Within a week of getting this book, I was writing dynamic web pages. The book (backed up by the website where you can download all the code) provides examples of how you can get dynamic pages (reading from a flat file or a database), and providing a shopping basket.
I would recommend this book as it describes the basics without waffle. I glanced through the book in a 2hr train journey, and then started coding as soon as I was home - following the examples was easy. I wrote a shopping basket system from scratch on a website without databases (ie cheapest hosting). I now use the book as a reference book - and don't want to sell it!

In the fourth and final volume of the Barefoot Gen series, Gen and his family have gone back to Hiroshima and, nine days after the detonation of the atomic bomb, are trying to pick up the pieces and move on with their lives. School has begun again, and Gen meets a whole new set of classmates, with the attendant budding friendships and immediate rivalries. Then, the unthinkable happens-- Gen's baby sister Tomoko is kidnapped. The bulk of the novel concerns Gen's attempts to find her, and the moral quandary in which he finds himself when he does.

As usual, Nakazawa's clean, crisp prose is often understated and compelling. The exception to this is in the final few pages, when a scene set up early in book one becomes relevant, and instead of letting the scene do the talking, Nakazawa gives Gen a "wow, look how relevant that was!" speech that ends the series on a slightly sour note. As usual, the characters are well-drawn and likable without being archetypes or ideals. Some of the ultimate fates of characters (telling you which ones would probably constitute a spoiler) are surprisingly realistic, and work very well considering those characters effectively drop out of the story, never to be seen again; rather than grating, it seems almost inevitable that in the chaos that is post-bomb Hiroshima, people will simply vanish into the night, never to be seen again.

This is a fine series, and well worth reading. If that final scene had been handled better, it might have been one of the best series I've read this year; as it is, it's a good one. *** ½

Father Arseny's life and teachings are truly remarkable in their depth of love, humility and wisdom. Born out of deep physical and spiritual suffering, Father Arseny's life is presented to the reader in vivid accounts by some of those who knew him best (spiritual children and fellow prisoners in the "corrective" prisons). This book is one of the few books that I would say actually changed me deeply with each reading. It sounds ridiculous, but even now, if I only look at it there on my shelf I am edified. It as if Fr. Arseny is here with me, praying for me. Perhaps some of you understand what I mean. That just one person such as himself exists in a decade is enough to witness to the power of Christ in the world.

This books is highly recommended for spiritual edification and growth.

I've seen various comedy books targetting both sexes, and found a lot of them funny. I naturally assumed this was one of them, rather than a load of vicious rhetoric by a guy who apparently genuinely believes that all women are complete scum and deserve to be treated as such. As I read it, I was increasingly surprised that anyone could harbour such beliefs and feelings and yet have managed to restrain them enough to stay out of prison.

You can see what this guy writes by looking at his website (just google the name of the book), but you won't find more evil hate-filled writings outside of a book of minutes of the BNP, so if you're a fine and upstanding member of society, then grab a large waterproof receptacle (assuming you don't have any actual vomit-bags) before having a look at it. You have been warned.

Give this one a miss!!, 2004-10-10

With Head Shot, Jardine takes Skinner to New York. The way it is written, the scene could be anywhere in Britain, apart from the few references to the US and the FBI. His description is woefully lacking, and we're led to believe that the Deputy Director is so stupid that he needs Skinner's input to solve the crime. Jardine should stick to keeping "Superman" Skinner in Edinburgh. He also has so many officers getting promoted and moved around that I lost track of who was who and where they were going. This book reads like an amateur wrote it and indeed, if this was a first novel, I very much doubt that it would be picked up by a publisher. Stick to reading Ian Rankin if you want to read about an Edinburgh detective - Rebus is so much more believable.

I am an ardent Gomez fan and have been for many a year and I was driven to write this due to the remarkable comments made in the aforementioned review.
This album will be loved by any Gomez fan, and any fan of good music. The production of the album, the first studio production since a label switch, really shows them in a less complicated more pixiesque light. Gomez still have everything - great melodies, great harmonies, great blues, and they still kick ass live. This album is yet another containing numerous tracks that absolutely ROCK on the stage! Look, JUST BUY IT!

I would recommend this for a good introduction into pilates, 2003-04-23

I bought the DVD version. For someone that's new to pilates, I think it's a good one to get started with. I acutally wished the intermediate workout was a little longer though. I also liked the instructions at the beginning. It was easy to follow and helped when I started the intermediate workout. I thought the rest periods for breathing needed to be a little bit longer as well. Overall, it's pretty good. I'd recommend it.

Worst SciFi movie I've seen in a while, 2009-12-25

I was really looking forward to this movie because of the very interesting premise, but I was sorely disappointed. The special effects and acting were good but in the end it was just a waste of time. This movie was visually unappealing (just gross) and at the end there was no reason for watching (no redeeming quality). At the end of the movie, I just felt "EWWWW".

Le livre mélange trois types de narration: celui d'un vieil homme qui a échappé à l'Holocauste de la seconde guerre mondiale, qui sait qu'il va disparaitre, mais qui ne veut pas être invisible. Une adolescente qui tient un journal, et qui se met à chercher l'auteur du livre que sa mère est en train de traduire: THe History of Love. Des extraits de ce même livre, au style totalement différent des autres chapitres, et un biographie de l'auteur du livre. Petit à petit, avec beaucoup de douceur et de subtilités, les différents récits s'entremêlent pour ne former plus qu'un seul. Je ne savais pas en achetant ce livre que Nicole Krauss était la femme de Jonathan Safran Foer. Bien sûr, les deux auteurs ont deux styles très différents. Jonathan Safran Foer a sûrement crée un style narratif révolutionnaire mais le livre de Nicole Krauss marque par les liens qui se créent à l'insu des personnages. On retiendra aussi la beauté de la narration, et les différents styles créés avec beaucoup d'intelligence pour chaque personnage.

Kaum eine andere Sportart spaltet derart die Zuschauer. Diese DVD liefert über weite Strecken den Beweis, daß muskulöse Frauen weder unerotisch noch vermännlicht sind. Natürlich entspricht das Aussehen dieser Athletinnen kaum dem Ideal bewegungsfauler Damen, die ansonsten eher in Frauenmagazinen blättern, um die neuesten "Iß Dich hungrig"-Rezepte zu studieren, und den Großteil der Männer befallen bei diesem Anblick Minderwertigkeitskomplexe, obwohl sie sich insgeheim davon angezogen fühlen. Technisch ist die DVD voll auf der Höhe (anamorph gestauchtes PAL-Signal), obwohl man sich gerade beim Posing mehrere Ansichten wünschen würde; hier fände die Multi-Angel-Technik eine ideale Anwendung. Das Spektrum dieser "Best Of"-DVD ist sehr vielfältig, obwohl bei rund 100 Minuten nicht jede Athletin zu Ehren kommt, die es ebenso wie die hier gezeigten verdient hätte.
