I did not expect to like this game, 2010-04-09I'll start by saying i'm an old school final fantasy fan and come from the generation that considers FFVI the best, so like many people from the same generation i felt the FF games started to go downhill after VII and haven't really cared for the last few ff games, so i did not expect to like this game, but like every FF game that comes out i bought it hoping it would be good.
Well i'll start by saying that the first 20 hours of the game are fun but nowhere near as fun as it gets from chapter 10 on. I wouldn't be surprised if alot of people put the game down during that time but if you can hang on its definitely worth it.
Battle system
I think this is the strongest point of the game. The ATB system used in every other game is back(thank god) but there aren't any random battles and you can see your enemy before attacking. Square really got this right in my opinion. The only thing i liked about FFXII was that there were no random battles but hated the MMO battle system so the developers finally give you ATB combat without the annoying random battles.
Strategy is key in this game. Each character can learn several different roles and you can assign certain roles to your characters. Some examples are Commando(offensive attacker), Medic(healer), and Ravager(spellcaster) Certain combinations of your character's roles make up what they call the Paradigm system. Choosing the right Paradigm combinations are vital in alot of battles and it definitely adds a new level of strategy and in my opinion its my favorite battle system of all the games in the series.
Characters
Loved the characters. I don't need to say much about them since amazon pretty much sums them up, but my complaints with the previous installments were that the characters either all looked the same(FFXII) or were completely boring and forgetable(FFVIII). Keep in mind these are just my opinions before i make anyone mad, but anyways all the characters may not have a ton of depth, but it kept me interested watching them grow throughout the course of the game. I really liked the main character Lightning and she's pretty much the first female main character since Terra way back in Final Fantasy VI, but she's a strong confident fighter and a good leader and the first main character i've really liked since FFIX.
The Bad
Say goodbye to towns, interacting with npc's, and exploring. As many people have complained the game is very linear and you have no interaction with towns. You do all your shopping at save points and unlock new items as the game progresses. All of these things mentioned are huge parts of the series and i'm sure it turned many people away. I definitely didn't like not being able to explore towns and talk to people but surprisingly the game was still alot of fun to me.
In Closing
I don't review many games and i pretty much just wrote this for all the old school final fantasy fans who haven't been pleased with the last few games but are wondering if they'd like this game. With all the changes you might think just as i did that this game is going to suck, but i'm happy to say i really enjoyed it despite the huge changes square made, and i really think the cool characters and awesome battle system make up for the bad. As i said i'm not much of a reviewer but i hope this helps those who are still undecided on this game.
