A moving tale, but the ending ruined it, 1999-12-06The evolving friendship of Frodo and Sam, from a cordial relationship of social unequals to a bond of love that levels all social distinctions, gives heart and soul to this heroic quest tale, and the story of the hardships they endure and the obstacles they overcome in order to complete their Quest is stirring. However, the ending was awful, unless escapism is your bag. It's not mine. Far better had Frodo rejected the Elvish temptation and determined instead to persevere in rebuilding his life at home despite his wounds, for the light which had sustained him on his quest remained with him still. A pity he did not see it.
