Sankt Petersburg City Guide. The city of high spirits and high art (Lonely Planet St. Petersburg)

 very disappointing!2005-12-12
For the last 10 year I have used a lot of Lonely Planet guidebooks. The most of them are pretty good but this time I have to say that I can not recommend the LP St.Petersburg!

Basically it is just a long list of some sights of the city. There is no real connection between them. If you have not been in Petersburg before - like me - you don't know where to start and what to do. The whole mess comes with the maps. Usually there are quite good and comprehensive in LP guidebooks. But this time all maps are on the end of the book and the maps do not say what you can find at the marked numbers. Therefore you have to look in an additional alphabetic sorted list with all the sights und hotels. If you are strolling around or do some sightseeing you always have to turn the pages and pages whole time.

To sum up, there is a lack of good information about the sights in St.Petersburg and the guidebook is quite difficult to use. But there is one very good section in the book: Food & Drinks. Even the author wrote in the acknowledgment that he spent the most of his time in research for bars, pubs and restaurants...

If you are in Petersburg only for one day or your have already been there a couple of times this book will probably fit your requirements. But if you are a first time visitor I cannot recommend it.
The must better choice it "St.Petersburg" von DK Eyewitness Travel Guides.
