I chose this camera in preference to other high-end ultra compacts because:
1 It has a good zoom range, 25-125mm, and starts with a wide angle. I thought that it was better to have the widest angle lens possible, in preference to having a long zoom. I can crop a photo to "zoom in" on something distant, but if the subject is too wide, there's nothing that can be done about it. In comparison, the new Canon Ixus 990is goes right up to 185mm, but only starts at 37mm
2 It has a large 3" LCD screen, the lack of a viewfinder didn't bother me
3 I liked the sound of the hybrid touch screen/controls method of operating and have found it pretty intuitive to use
4 It has all the expected high end facilities - anti shake, face recognition, intelligent auto mode, HD video, etc
At the time of buying, there were no reviews of this camera. However, I had read one or two adverse reports about its predecessor, the FX500. In particular, the shutter response was said to be slow, and the pictures too dark. I haven't found either of these problems with the FX550.
There is only 40Mb of built-in memory, and no SD card is supplied, but I bought a Sandisk Extreme SDHC card, which flies!
I am delighted with the new camera. It's easy to use, well made, produces great photos and looks good.
One niggle - the wrist strap is disproportionately thick for the compact size of the camera, and doesn't have a slider to tighten it onto the wrist.
