The first 200 pages seem painfully pedantic. "Why can't he say that the character has a COLD? Why does he have to say that they have a RHINOVIRUS?" Then the payoff begins: layered, hilarious, sorrowful, lovely. "Ah, the narrator is pedantic. Not (necessarily) the author." Is it worth it? YES, if you don't mind the fact that Wallace DOESN'T BOTHER TO WRITE AN ENDING!! At least not one that anybody with a lot more free time than I can discern... Petty, perhaps.
