"An Accidental House" is Schleicher's best yet. He combines the manic story-telling techniques of his first novel (multiple narrators, flashbacks, interwoven plot lines) with the bizarre dreaminess of his second (is this reality or fiction?) in this "inpsired by a true story" tale of a troubled young man (Truman Murdoch) obsessed with solving the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a young woman (Dorina Sayler). While it starts out as a nifty genre piece, it quickly turns into something much more as Schleicher delves into what draws us to mysteries in the first place and the psychological screws are wound tighter than novel's breakneck pace. Loaded with pop culture references, ties to current world events, sly and devious dark humor and fascinating characters with shady secrets, this is Schleicher's most mature and accomplished work to date. A real page-turner that will keep you guessing to the very end.
