Had it for 3 months, driven 6,000 hwy miles: so far so good!, 2010-02-12Just wanted to say I've driven from Ohio to California with this, and up to reno from los angeles, and its been great. Even in the extreme traffic enforcement environment of Ohio/Penn etc the Escort took care of me. The laser warning is a bit shocking since I'm not used to hearing it, it's almost a star trek phaser! On a radar gun facing me, forget it, the range is unbelievable. The trickiest are the around the corner shots, or, worst of all, on the way to Reno I had a radar gun firing away from me towards the road and behind a bridge embankment. *that's* a toughie! Still, even with such a difficult shot I was easily able to slow down to legal speed, just not the huge space cushion I'm used to.
I now realize I probably could have gotten by with the non - gps model, but I thought I might like the added protection against red light cameras, and I *love* the auto-learn mode that registers automatic door openers and whatnot. It *really* cuts down on false alarms.
You learn how to listen to the detector. If I get a false alarm, it beeps for just about 2 seconds(k band I think usually). If you hear the KA band sound, then its time to hit the brakes as those aren't ever falsies!! Same with laser. Judging ffrom how long they hold the laser on me, and what I've seen on youtube, the laser isn't as instant as you might think. I believe hitting the brakes before it gets a fix may be effective.
Also, I don't think most cops bother shooting cars individually, they seem to just leave the guns on.
I didn't think I *really* needed this, because I normally do the speed limit. That said, I'm so glad I bought it. It just reduces the anxiety I have over every squad car(most aren't running radar!)I see and things that *might* be a squad car on the side of the road. Its really helped me relax on long drives, WELL WORTH IT!
