A masterpiece, 2009-03-10What can a person like me (an American) say about 'Britain From Above'?
I suppose we have a slightly different perspective on the work of the BBC, since the United States lacks even the palest shadow of a comparable organisation.
In a word, BfA is stunning. The vast amount of research and loving care put into everything from satellite reconstructions of taxi movements to bird migrations from around the world, to history lessons stretching back hundreds of years is simply overwhelming. Andrew Marr's investment in this project is palpable from beginning to end--and his enthusiasm for this land is catching.
The historicity and scholarship behind the series is matched seamlessly with an accessible, thought-provoking, and visually stunning presentation. The attention to large themes (telecommunications networks, the reconstruction of London post-WWII) couples wonderfully with the short, charming vignettes looking at taxi movement or images of animals in the wild.
And a word about the music: 'Planet Earth' set a new standard for soundtracks, and 'Britain from Above' matches it beat for beat--no detail, it seems, escaped the producers' eyes (and ears)...
Seen through the eyes of a foreigner, 'Britain from Above' is a staggering tour de force; an epic story of an epic land, one of the most beautiful on the planet.
