"The Well-Tuned Piano" is La Monte Young's magnum opus: an improvisatory but structured piano piece based on Young's unique tuning in just intonation. Although Young is perhaps better known for his work with extended pitches and sine wave installations, "The Well-Tuned Piano" features Young alternating between musical themes and passages he appropriately describes as "clouds". The "clouds" consist of chords played rapidly and for long durations to create shimmering, sustained resonances. In this sense, there is continuity between "The Well-Tuned Piano" and Young's other works that comprise extended pitches and silences, such as "The Second Dream of the High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer from The Four Dreams of China". The performance of "The Well-Tuned Piano" here stretches across five discs. Listening to all five discs in one sitting/setting is the best way to appreciate the complexity and beauty of this composition.
