 Very worthwhile reading2005-04-16
The book paints a vivid picture of life in Northern England while the Thirty Years' War rages in Continental Europe. The rising Puritans believe Catholics - as well as the vagrant poor - to be the root of all Evil and John Brigge, himself a Catholic, is forced to hide his beliefs in order to survive. At first appalled by the poor and how they live, he begins to see them for what they are and he for one - even if the ruling Puritans don't - understands that threats and public spectacles of physical punishment can't improve moral values. The growing threats to his livelihood, if not even his life, make him start a secret investigation into what really happened to Katharine Shay and her baby.
The book is well written and I shall read it again, however you have to like its apocalyptic atmosphere. There even is a sort of happy end (read the book and you will know what I mean).
